Who is Saint Spyridon?
The island of Cyprus was the birthplace of this famous Saint and the place in which he spent his life in the service of the Church. He was a simple shepherd and farmer, and remained simple and humble to the end of his days. He married young and had children, but when his wife died, he devoted himself entirely to the service of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Because of his great devotion, he was later chosen as Bishop of Tremithus. This did not change his simple life-style and he continued to take charge of his sheep and cattle himself as well as tilling his own land. He consumed very little of his own produce, giving the greater part to the poor.
He performed great wonders by God's power, making rain fall in a drought, stopping the course of a river, raising the dead, healing the Emperor Constans of a grave sickness, seeing and hearing angels, foreseeing future events, and penetrating the secrets of the human heart. He turned many to the one true Faith, and worked without ceasing for his Lord. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicea in 325, and by his simple and clear expositions of the Faith, as well as through miracles, brought back many heretics to Orthodoxy.
He dressed so simply that once, when he was invited by the Emperor to the imperial court, a soldier took him for a beggar and slapped him. The meek and guileless Saint turned the other cheek. Throughout his life, he continued to glorify God with many miracles and was of great aid both to individuals and to the whole Church of God. He entered into rest in the Lord in the year 348. His wonder-working relics now lie incorrupt on the island of Corfu and continue to glorify God with many healings, signs, and wonders.
On the Church calendar, his Feast is celebrated on 12 December [which corresponds to 25 December on the civil calendar].

¿Quién es San Espiridión?
La isla de Chipre fue tanto el lugar de nacimiento de este famoso santo como el lugar donde pasó su vida en servicio a la Iglesia. Venía de una simple familia de agricultores, y permaneció simple y humilde hasta el final de su vida. Se casó joven y tuvo hijos, pero al morir su esposa, se dedicó completamente al servicio de Dios.
A causa de su fervor, fue escogido como obispo de Tremitunte, y aún siendo obispo no cambió su simple estilo de vida, sino que continuó cuidando su ganado y arando la tierra él mismo. Consumía muy pocos de sus productos, y daba la mayor parte de estos a los pobres.
Obró grandes milagros por el poder de Dios, haciendo que lloviera durante una sequía, levantando a muchos muertos, sanando al emperador Constancio de una grave enfermedad, viendo y oyendo ángeles, previendo eventos futuros, y escrutando los secretos del corazón humano. Convirtió a muchos a la verdadera Fe e hizo muchas otras cosas. Estuvo presente en el Primer Concilio Ecuménico celebrado en Nicea en el 325 d. C., y mediante sus claras y sencillas, además de sus convincentes milagros, trajo a muchos herejes de regreso a la Ortodoxia.
Vestía tan simplemente que cierta vez, habiendo sido invitado por el Emperador a su corte, un soldado le confundió con un mendigo y le pegó un golpe. El manso y sencillo Espiridión volvió la otra mejilla. Glorificó a Dios con muchos milagros, y fue de gran ayuda tanto a individuos como a toda la Iglesia de Dios. Entro a su descanso en el Señor en el 348 d. C., y sus reliquias, que obran maravillas, reposan en la isla de Corfú, donde continúan glorificando a Dios con muchos milagros.
En el calendario eclesiástico, su fiesta patronal se celebra el 12 de diciembre [que corresponde al 25 de diciembre en el calendario civil].
